The refelection of Istanbul Conference in Afghanistan Media

The Istanbul Meeting, attended by more than twenty countries and international organizations was held in Turkey on Wednesday 2nd, November 2011. Ended on 4th November, with a declaration. Istanbul international meeting is primary ground for the introduction of the Second international Bonn Conference to be held in December 2011 in Germany.

For many Persian and Pashtu news sources, the optimism has been the role of Turkey which plays the role of host this meeting. The editorial of Newspaper “Rooznama Afghanistan” writes “Although many have expressed their views and defined this meeting as less acheived conference, but considering the important role of Turkey and its potentials in the region the meeting was positive. In the same manner the daily newspaper SALAMWATANDAR writes “ we belive that in this (Istanbul Conference) meeting, there are some pragmatic actions to be taken. Turkey can be good host both for Afghanistan and Pakistan to resolve the issues.”[1]

While the large portion of the media is analysing the achivements and consequesnces of the post Istanbul Meeting, some of the media talks about the basics in which the government of Afghanistan did not consider them. According to these media, these shortcomings are the weakness point which shows that government only plays its formalilty to attend meetings related to Afghanistan otherwsie there is no clear undrestanding among the political leadership to form a compehrehnsive agenda with the support or general consensus of other political leadership in the oppositions.

The Persian based Oruzgan website has written that lack of the presence of an Hazara leader in the composition of the Afghan delegation to the conference was the milestone shortcoming of this meeting.[2] In the otherhand, Wahid Mozhda-Afghan analyst told in an interview to the DARI RADIO that the conference was failed in its initiations. He further elaborated that the intitials which were taken in the Oslo meeting was diverted from regional integration to the pressures on neighboring countries. Mozhda emphsized that Istanbul Conference couldn’t fulfil expectations.[3]

Persian Website PayameRooz in an article wrote: “ Afghanistan has seen such meetings and conferences many times. Therefore the people of Afghanistan belive that the is no any positive result from this meeting too.” This website also states, “ the agenda in Istanbul is not new. We are witnessed the same agendas in almost all the meeting reagrding Afghanistan situations.[4] Mahmud Saikal, an Afghan analyst crticized the first article of the declaration which is called Istanbul Process and says, “ this article states that Afghanistan is the center for all the problems in the region. Perhaps we are once again blamed.”[5]
